Yemi Osinbanjo, the vice president of Nigeria who goes by the full name Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbanjo is a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He is a lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Also, he is a professor of law who also works as a senior partner at SimmonsCooper Partners.
He is the son of Sir Opeoluwa Osinbanjo and was born on the 8th of March, 1957. He is 61 years old.
Career and Life History
Having attended primary school at Corona Primary School and secondary school at Igbobi College Yaba, he graduated from University of Lagos with a degree in law between 1975 to 1978.
He furthered his education at the London school of economics, where he obtained a master of law.
However, after education, he practiced law and became a teacher. First, he served at the Bendel Development and Planning Authority where he was the legal officer.
From there he became a lecturer at the University of Lagos and rose to senior lecturer from 1983 to 1986. It is important to note that his teaching career in law started at the age of 23.
Although professor Yemi Osinbanjo keeps a low profile, he has always been very ambitious. He became the adviser for legal and litigation to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice then, Bola Ajibola.
Later he rose to professor of law and head of the department of public law at the University of Lagos. He was also a member of the cabinet, Lagos State Ministry of Justice and later became Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice from 1999 to 2007.
Internationally, he has served as the staff member of United Nations, member United Nation’s Secretary General’s Committee of Experts on Conduct and Discipline, which is part of United Nations Peacekeeping Personnel at that time.
He has also made worked at the bank, with the African Development Bank as Ethics Adviser to Ethics Committee and a Non-executive Director of Citibank.
While he was Attorney General, he started the Lagos State Justice Reform Project which is responsible for establishing the Directorate for Citizens’ Right (DCR). The DCR is responsible for free legal services and representation (legal) to poor and indigent citizens. He also co-founded the Convention on Business Integrity and Justice Research Institute Ltd.
Christian and Pastoral Career
Yemi Osinbanjo is a pastor and pastor-in-charge of Lagos Province 48(Olive Tree Provincial Headquarters) of The Redeemed Christian Church of God in Ikoyi, Lagos State. However, due to and after many controversies, he famously said: “I am still the pastor-in-charge of Province 48 in Lagos- I am on loan in the political world”. He is also the chairman, Board of Trustees of Redeemer’s University.
Together with his wife, they founded the Orderly Society Trust, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion of Christian ethics and orderliness. The organization was founded in honor of Opeoluwa Osinbanjo and Oluwatoyin Osinbanjo.
He also organizes Liberty Schools Project which provides free primary school education with free school lunches to poor children. They have three major sites in Lagos State, Obanikoro, Ikota and Makoko. He is responsible for several other initiatives, foundations, and organizations aimed at bettering life and health.
He is part of the founders of the All Progressive Congress and is among key Nigerians who designed and produced its manifesto in 2013. He was an active member of the campaign for its promotion. He was picked as the running mate of the APC presidential candidate, the retired General Muhammadu Buhari on 17th Dec 2014 for 2015 General Elections.
Thereafter, he was confirmed the vice president on 31st March 2015 at the Eagles Square, after President Buhari won the elections and was sworn in. He is the most educated vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He has also acted in the capacity of President, working on the orders of the president when he was away on Medical leave on May 9, 2017.
Professor Yemi Osinbanjo is married to Oladolapo Osinbanjo who is also the granddaughter of foremost Nigerian leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The marriage is blessed with three children: 2 daughters and a son, Kiki Osinbanjo, Kayinsola Osinbanjo and Fiyinfoluwa Osinbanjo.
