It takes more than talent to excel in any chosen field. Once a talent is identified, it must be nurtured and groomed to ensure its potential is maximized. This is especially the case when it comes to football.
Football is a highly lucrative sport with the top talents in the profession pocketing several thousands of euros weekly. The professional footballers that we enjoy watching now had to pass through some form of training to get there. Most of them enrolled at one football academy or another at a stage in their development. Yes, football is an art but it can also be learned just like any other profession.
Football clubs in major footballing nations around the world have academies where they groom their young talents. Sadly in Nigeria, the reality is different. Most football clubs do not have academies and the few that do, do not have enough facilities to adequately train these young ones. Thankfully, there are some quality football academies in Nigeria that are not owned by any football club. One such academy is the Pepsi football academy.
Pepsi Football Academy is one of the top names in Nigeria when it comes to grooming young footballing talents. The academy has proven itself to be reliable and efficient over time with many of its graduates going on to achieve great footballing careers. Some of the country’s finest footballers are graduates of this academy. The likes of John Obi Mikel, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, Elderson Echiejile, Isaac Promise, Onyekachi Apam, and so on all graduated from the academy.
Pepsi Football Academy was founded in 1992 by Kashimawo Laloko. The academy started at the Agege stadium courtesy of the Lagos State Sports Council. It was not called Pepsi Football Academy at inception. The name Pepsi Football Academy came after the academy secured the backing of Pepsi in 1994. Since then, the academy has continued to enjoy the backing of Pepsi so much that it now operates 13 centers across the nation.
The academy is now widely recognized as one of the country’s finest football academies. Currently, there are over 3000 students enrolled in the academy across its 13 centers. The students are aged between 6 and 18, both male and female. There are 54 coaches available to tutor students on the various aspects of football. Pepsi Football Academy operates round the year.
