The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was set up on the 22nd of May, 1973 by the Yakubu Gowon administration. The scheme was birthed as a result of the need for reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war.
Through the scheme, graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria are involved in the building and development of the nation. They serve for a period of one year mandatorily. Currently, members of the scheme are paid the sum of N19, 800 monthly as stipend for their upkeep. Their PPA’s (Place of Primary Assignment) are also enjoined to give stipends to these Corps members.
