Sharing airtime from your line with friends & family on the same network is a service enjoyed by telecoms subscribers in Nigeria. The service isn’t new & is available on all the major telecoms networks in the country. For those who do not know or need a reminder on how to transfer airtime on Airtel Nigeria network, the process is described here.
The Airtel service that allows you to share airtime from your line with loved ones is known as Me2U. Here is how to use this service.
First, you need to change your default pin if you are using the service for the first time. If you have used the service previously & changed the default PIN, you don’t need to do change your PIN again. If you have forgotten your PIN, do not worry you will also learn how to recover your Airtel transfer PIN here.
How to Change Airtel Me2U Transfer PIN
There are two ways of changing your Me2U transfer PIN, one is via USSD & the other is through SMS. Both methods are described here.
To change your Airtel Me2U transfer PIN using USSD, dial *432# on your mobile phone. You will be presented with a list of options number 1-5. Select option 3 which is PIN Management. To select this option, type 3 in the space provided & send.
Next, you will be taken to a new page which has just two options, change PIN & Forgot PIN. Type 1 & send to change your PIN. The next screen will request for your old PIN, input the default PIN which is 1234. Next, you will be asked to type a new PIN. Type any 4 digit PIN of your choosing. This becomes your new Airtel transfer PIN & will be required anytime you want to make airtime transfers from your line.
The SMS method is another means of changing your Airtel transfer code. Open the SMS app on your phone. Type the default pin, leave a space, type a new 4-digit PIN & send to 432. For example, the default PIN that is assigned to every new user of the Me2U service is 1234. To change this pin to a new one such as 8754, text 1234 8754 & send to 432 via SMS.
Once you have changed the default Airtel transfer PIN to a personalized one, you can begin to make transfers.
How to Transfer Airtime on Airtel
To share the airtime credit with your loved ones, you can choose one of two methods. Both methods are easy and fairly straightforward. The first method is through USSD, while the second method is through SMS.
How to Transfer Airtime on Airtel Using USSD
Dial *432# on your phone to begin. You will be presented with five options numbered 1-5. Option 1 is Airtel to Airtel. This option allows you to transfer airtime to other Airtel subscribers. Type 1 in the space provided & send. In the next screen, you will be asked to enter the Airtel number you wish to transfer airtime to.
Enter the number correctly & ensure you double-check the number. Once you are satisfied that you have entered the correct number, click send. You will be asked to input your Airtel transfer PIN in the next page. Enter the correct PIN & send. The transfer will be made to the number you provided.
How to Transfer Airtel on Airtel Using SMS
There is also an SMS option for transferring airtime on Airtel for those that prefer this option. Open the SMS app on your phone and send an SMS to 432 using the following format. Type 2u, leave space, type the Airtel number you wish to transfer to, leave another space, type the amount, leave space again, and then type your PIN. For example, to send #100 airtime to 08021234567 using the PIN in our earlier example, our SMS will look like this, 2u 08021234567 100 8754. This SMS will be sent to 432 & the transfer will be effected immediately.
Note: The Airtel Me2U service is not free & attracts a fee of #10 for every successful transfer. There is no fee for changing your PIN or retrieving it & neither will you be charged for unsuccessful transfers. Also, transfers can only be made to numbers on the Airtel network. For those asking how can I transfer credit from Airtel to other networks, this is currently not possible.
How to Recover Airtel Transfer PIN
If you have forgotten your Airtel transfer PIN, you can easily recover it following this process.
Dial ^432#. Select option 3 which is PIN Management. To do this, type 3 in the space provided & send. The next page allows you to recover your PIN if you have forgotten it by selecting option 2.
You can also reset your Airtel transfer PIN by calling the Airtel customer care line, 111. A customer care agent will attend to you & help you reset your transfer PIN.

How to Gift Data on Airtel
To begin, dial *432#. You will see 5 options, option 2 is Gift Data Bundle. Input 2 in the space provided & send. On the next page, you will see two options, option 1 is Change PIN while option 2 is Data Gifting.
If you are using the service for the first time, enter 1 in the space provided & send. This will allow you to change your default PIN. You must change the default PIN before you can begin to gift data through this service. The default PIN is 1234.
If your PIN has been changed, you will select option 2 which is Data Gifting. On the next page, you will see four options as shown below.
- Monthly Bundles
- Weekly Bundles
- Daily/Weekly Bundles
- Mega Bundles.
Select the one that you want. You will be shown a new page that displays all the data bundles available under the selected option and their cost. Select the option that you want again & send. Next, you will be asked to enter 1 to activate.
After that, you will input the phone number of the recipient & send. You will enter your data transfer PIN to complete the process. The data will be credited to the recipient while your line is charged for the transaction.
How to Request for Airtime on Airtel (Airtel Credit Me Service)
If you are urgently in need of airtime & you can request for airtime from your loved ones. This service is called Airtel Credit Me. It is free to use & allows you to send a free SMS to other Airtel subscribers requesting them to send you airtime. To do this, dial *141*8*recipient number#, e.g. *141*8*08021234567#. The recipient will receive an SMS from your number with the message “Please Credit Me”.
How to Borrow Airtime on Airtel
If you run out of airtime on the Airtel network, you can also request airtime loan from your service provider. A 15% fee is charged on every successful airtime loan request. The fee is deducted upfront from the amount requested while the rest of the loan is deducted from your next airtime recharge.
To borrow airtime on Airtel, dial *500#. You will be presented with a list of options. Option 2 is Borrow Credit, type 2 in the space provided & send. You will then be shown a list of different airtime amounts that you can borrow. The amounts you will see will depend on your airtime usage.
If you use a lot of airtime, you can borrow higher amounts. Enter the number that corresponds to the amount of airtime you want to borrow in the space provided & send. Your account will be credited with the requested amount instantly.
You can request for a particular airtime amount directly by using the USSD code *500*credit amount#. For example, if you want #100 airtime, just dial *500*100#. Your account will be credited immediately if you are eligible to borrow the required amount.
Note that the amount credited to your account will be 85% of the requested amount as the 15% fee is deducted upfront. For example, if you borrow #100, your account will only be credited with #85.
Apart from airtime, you can also borrow data on Airtel. The process is similar to how to borrow airtime from Airtel.
How to Borrow Data on Airtel
Airtel offers a service that allows you to borrow some data & pay back later. To borrow data, dial *500# on your device. You will see a list of options, option 3 is Borrow Data. Enter 3 in the space provided & send. You will see the data amounts available to you in the next page, as well as the cost for each. A 15% fee is charged on this service as well.
