After opening it, you will select your country, select Nigeria if you are from Nigeria. Then look to the topmost right part of your phone screen, you will see three dots. Click on it. You will see the option to sign in, click on it. It then takes you to a page where you can sign in for existing customers or create a new account if you are a new user.
For new users, you will be required to supply your full name, email address, and phone number. Once registered, sign in and you are good to go. You will find yourself on the homepage of the app.
Just like a physical store, there are different sections on the platform. At the left topmost part of your screen just beside the name of the company, JUMIA, there are three (3) dashes. Click on it and it will take you to the different sections on the platform. Find the Phone and Tablets section. Under this section, there are three categories, Mobile Phones, Tablets, and Accessories. Click on the category that suits what you want.
For a new phone, click on Mobile Phones. For a Tablet, click on Tablet. If what you need is an accessory for a mobile device or tab, click on Accessories. Since we are discussing how to buy a new phone, I will continue with the Mobile Phone category. After clicking on the Mobile Phone category, there are three sections under this category, Smart Phone, Cell Phone and All.
If you want to buy a Smartphone which refers to top-end mobile devices, click on Smart Phone. For lower-end mobile devices used basically for making calls alone, click on Cell Phone.
Better still, you can click on the All category and all the available mobile phones on the platform will be loaded for you. So I click on the All category. You can then continue to scroll down till you find a suitable device that you want to buy. To save time and stress, you can sort the phones based on popularity, best rating, new in, lowest price and highest price.
Personally, I don’t worry about the sorting, I just go with the default which is popularity. You can also filter the phones available based on certain criteria such as RAM, BRAND, PRICE, MEGAPIXELS, SHIPPED FROM, FREE PREMIUM SERVICE AND RATING.
To see all these filter options, click on “Filter” which is top left of your screen. Let’s say have a particular brand of phone in mind, let’s say Nokia, with a RAM size of 2gb and I have a maximum of 100,000 nairas to spend on the phone. I will just click on “Filter”, then “Brand”. Under brand, I will scroll down and click on “Nokia”. Then I will click on “RAM”, select “2”. Lastly, I will click on “Price”, then set the minimum and maximum price range.
Let’s say we set it to 70,000-100,000. Then click on “Apply” at the bottom right of your screen. This way, you will only see Nokia phones with 2gb RAM and price range of 70,000 to 100,000 Naira. So click on the one you want to buy. Check out the specs of the phone and review by previous buyers. Once you are satisfied, click on “Buy now” at the bottom of your screen. It adds the phone to your online shopping cart which is then displayed for you to check out and pay. You will see the option to buy an insurance plan for your phone for a fee.
If you want the insurance plan, click on it, the fee will be added to your total balance. If you don’t want the insurance plan, click on “No thanks”. After that, you will click on the “Continue” button. You will be taken to another page where your total fee will be displayed. You then have two options, “Complete your order” or “Call to order”. Click on “complete your order”.
The call to order option means you want to complete the order via a mobile call. After clicking on “Complete your Order”, you will be taken to another page where you will set your shipping address. The shipping address is your physical address where you want the phone delivered to. You will then select if you want the phone delivered to the address for a fee or you will rather pick it up by yourself at the nearest Jumia Pick up station.
If you choose to pick it up by yourself, no added cost to your bill but if you want it delivered to you, you will pay a fee. Decide and go with the option best for you. I go with the free option. Then click on “Proceed to payment”. The payment page will be loaded, displaying all the available payment options. Currently, there are 3 payment options on Jumia Nigeria. “Cards (Jumiapay)”, “Interswitch web pay” and “Pay on delivery”.
The first two options require you to pay with your debit card instantly while the third option allows you to delay payment until the phone arrives and you physically examine to certify it is okay before making payment. Select the option you prefer. I will use the second option for this tutorial.
Also, if you scroll down the payment page, you will see a box asking you to enter a voucher code. If you have a voucher code which is a code that removes a certain amount of money or a takes off a certain percentage off your total fee, you can enter it in that box and click on “Apply”. If you don’t have a voucher, just scroll down and click on “Proceed to summary”.
On the summary page, you see all the details of the transaction such as the total amount, expected delivery date and payment option. Click on “Confirm” and it will take you to another page where you will enter your card details for those paying immediately. Enter your card details and pay. For those paying on delivery, once you click “confirm” on the summary page, you are done making the order.
An agent of Jumia will call you on your registered number to confirm if you actually made the order before the phone is packaged and shipped. That’s how you order a new phone on Jumia.
