A driver’s license is a must-have document before taking to the road as a driver of any form of vehicle. The application/registration process for the driver’s license is pretty much straightforward and will be discussed in detail in this article. Technology has made it quite easy to complete the application process as this can be done online as well as offline. The processes to follow whether you are a new applicant or you just want to renew your driver’s license are as follows;
Process of Applying for A Driver’s License for New Applicants in Nigeria
For those applying for a driver’s license for the first time, certain conditions must be met before such persons pick up the application form. These are;
- Attend a driving training course at an accredited school by the FRSC
- Take the driving test under the supervision of a VIO (Vehicle Inspection Officer)
- Obtain the certificate of driving proficiency
After these three conditions have been met, such persons can then physically pick up the application form and fill or complete the application form online. For online applications, the form can be accessed at www.nigeriadriverslicence.org. Once on the website, click on DL Application, and a drop-down list will pop up. Choose New Driver’s License, then input your driving test certificate number in the box provided and click on validate.
Once your driving test certificate number has been verified, complete the application form online and proceed to make payment of the application fees online. Some of the banks that you can make this online payment through are FCMB, UBA, WEMA, and UNION. Print out the Acknowledgement slip and keep.
For those interested in filling the application form physically, the form can be picked up at designated driver’s license registration points. Payment of the required sum must be made to ensure the application is accepted and processed. The licensing fee is payable at branches of specified banks.
You are to go to the bank with a copy of the driver’s license form as your driver’s license application ID will be needed to facilitate your payment. After the payment of fees either for online application or physical application, the next stage is to present the application form and some other documents to the Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) Officer and also the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) at the DLC for endorsement.
Other necessary documents to be submitted to the BIR and VIO are payment slip, learners permit, a certificate from driving school, birth certificate, certificate of eyes test, and certificate of VIO test. Once this stage is completed, proceed to the Federal Road Safety Officer at the DLC for biometric data capture.
After the process is completed, you will be given a temporary driver’s license that is valid for 60 days (2 months). It is assumed that the new driver’s license will be ready within that period so pay a visit to the BIR before the 60th day of completing the license application to pick up your license. If the license is not ready after the temporary license expired, a new temporary license will be issued for you.
The summary of the process for obtaining a driver’s license for the first time is presented below.
Step 1: The first step is to attend training at an accredited driving school
Step 2: After completing your training, the driving school will present you to the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) for a driving test
Step 3: If you pass the test, the VIO will give you a certificate of proficiency
Step 4: The next step is to complete the driver’s licensing application form at the Driver’s Licensing Centre (DLC)
Step 5: Pay the license fee either online or at the bank
Step 6: Once payment is made, you are then required to present your application form to the Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) Officer and VIO at the DLC for endorsement
Step 7: You will then proceed to the FRSC Officer at the DLC for biometric data capture
Step 8: A temporary license will be given to you. This temporary license is valid for 60 days
Step 9: Return to the BIR Office after 60 days to pick up the original driver’s license

It is a must that you obtain a driver’s license before you are qualified to drive on Nigerian roads. The essence of this is to ensure that all drivers are trained on how to safely drive on roads and not endanger the lives of other road users. The license is obtained from the appropriate authorities and renewed at an interval of 3 or 5 years.
