So who is Elon Musk? Elon Musk is a billionaire business magnate, industrial designer and engineer. He was born on the 28th of June, 1971. He is the founder of several companies which include SpaceX, OpenAI and Neuralink.

Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa to a South African father and a Canadian mother. His father, Errol Musk was an electromechanical engineer, consultant, property developer, pilot and sailor. His mother is Maye Musk and she was a model and dietitian. Maye was born in Saskatchewan, Canada but grew up in South Africa.
Elon has a younger brother named Kimbal, and a younger sister named Tosca. Kimbal Musk was born in 1972 and was an early business partner of Elon. Tosca was born in 1974 and is the CEO of the video streaming site Passionflix. He also has a half brother and a half-sister from his father’s side.
Childhood
As a child, Elon Musk loved reading. At the age of 10, he took to computing using the Commodore VIC-20.[32]. He learned computer programming with the aid of a manual and soon mastered it. After quitting his Stanford PhD program in 1995, Elon Musk, his brother Kimbal along with Greg Kouri started Zip2, a web software company. They raised some money from a small group of angel investors to start the company. Zip2 developed and marketed an Internet city guide for the newspaper publishing industry, with maps, directions and yellow pages. The company ultimately became successful and was acquired by Compaq for $307 million in February 1999. Elon Musk received $22 million for his 7% share of the company.
With $10 million from the money he got from the sale of Zip2, Elon Musk co-founded X.com. X.com was an online financial service and e-mail payment company. One year after it was founded, the company merged with Confinity, which had a money-transfer service known as PayPal. The merged company focused on the PayPal service and this led to it being renamed PayPal in 2001.
Elon Musk held 11.7% in PayPal before its acquisition by eBay in 2002. The acquisition was for $1.5 billion in stock, of which Musk received $165 million.
In 2001, Elon Musk conceived Mars Oasis. The idea behind this was to land a miniature experimental greenhouse on Mars, containing food crops growing on Martian soil. This will ultimately lead to a renewed public interest in space exploration.
Elon Musk’s attempts to acquire Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could send the envisioned payloads into space ended in frustration. This led him to establish a company that can build the rockets that he needed. Thus, SpaceX was born in 2002 with the long-term goal of creating a true spacefaring civilization.
Musk invested $100 million of his early fortune in the company and is currently the CEO and CTO. In 2015, SpaceX began the development of the Starlink constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to provide satellite Internet access. The first two prototype test-flight satellites were launched in February 2018.
On the 30th of May 2020, SpaceX launched its first manned flight called Demo-2. It thus became the first private company to both place a person into orbit and to eventually dock a crewed space-craft with the ISS. Also, the launch was the first time since the end of the Shuttle Program that an American astronaut has been launched from American soil on an American rocket.
Top electric car manufacturer, Tesla Inc. is another company associated with Elon Musk. He is currently the CEO and product architect of the company, both positions he has occupied since 2008. Other projects associated with Elon Musk include SolarCity. The company was co-founded by his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive but Musk provided the initial concept and financial capital.
SolarCity grew to become the second-largest provider of solar power systems in the United States by 2013. 3 years later, SolarCity was acquired by Tesla in a deal valued at over $2 billion. Tesla converted SolarCity to its solar division after the acquisition.
Elon Musk in August 2013 unveiled the concept for a high-speed transportation system called Hyperloop. In Dec 2015, Elon Musk started OpenAI, a not-for-profit artificial intelligence research company. In 2016, Musk co-founded a neurotechnology start-up company called Neuralink. The company aims to integrate the human brain with artificial intelligence. In December of 2016, he announced the creation of The Boring Company.

Elon Musk was formerly married to Canadian author Justine Wilson. They married in 2000 and separated 8 years later. The two are co-parents to 5 sons.
Elon Musk began dating English actress Talulah Riley in 2008. They got married in 2010 before going their separate ways in 2012. The two reconciled and remarried in July 2013. Their second marriage officially ended in late 2016.
In May 2018, Musk and Canadian musician Grimes announced that they were in a relationship. The couple has a son. The child was born on the 4th of May, 2020.
