Di’ja Biography

Di’ja is one of Nigeria’s top female music artistes and is currently signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records. Her real name is Hadiza Salma Blell. She was born to a Sierra Leonean father and a Nigerian mother. Her mother hails from Zaria in Northern Nigeria which explains her style of dressing. Her father is a former deputy minister of Sierra Leone. Her first album was released in 2008 and this marked the official beginning of her music career. She got signed to Mavin Records in 2013 and has been with the label ever since. The beautiful mother of two has several hit songs to her credit.

Early Life

Di’ja spent her early years living in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the US and also Canada. She grew up in Kaduna where she had a colourful childhood, the impact of which can be seen in her colourful lifestyle as an adult. She has an elder brother who she claims is her best friend. Di’ja had to relocate moved abroad to further her education. She excelled academically and earned a double degree in Biology and Psychology. Despite her academic success, her passion for music and art was overwhelming which eventually led to her taking up a music career. She claims her love for music is innate and also had to do with her parent’s collection of CDs. Her music career kick-started while she was in Canada when a friend of hers named Aman Manhas signed her up for a singing competition called Beat Music Awards. Since taking part in that competition, Di’ja hasn’t looked backwards.



Her father is Joe Blell, a former Sierra Leonean deputy minister while her mother is Nigerian. She has a brother. In 2015, she married her husband named Rotimi and the couple welcomed their first child, a son the following year. In March 2018, Di’ja and her husband welcomed their second child, a daughter.

Music Career

Her music career took off in 2008 following which she released her debut single titled ‘’Rock steady’’ the following year. The song got nominated for Best Urban/R&B Single at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. Her first award was in 2008 when she won the Best New Artist Award at the 2008 Beat Music Awards also in Canada. She continued to progress in her music career, releasing several singles while still in Canada. In 2010, she was one of the opening acts for popular musician Akon’s performance at the Independence concert held in honour of Sierra Leone’s 49th Independence anniversary. She was introduced to ace Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy who listened to two of her songs and liked what he heard. So he took her up and put her on probation for about 8 months to ascertain the level of her talent and how well she gets on with other members of the label. She was officially announced as a member of Mavin Records by Don Jazzy on the 14th of February 2014 and thus began her journey within Nigeria’s fast-growing music industry. On the same day she was announced as a Mavin, her first official single titled ‘’Yaro’’ dropped. The song celebrates love and commitment against all odds. The song was rendered in both Hausa and Krio dialects, paying tribute to both her Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage. She was on ‘’Dorobucci’’, a group song featuring all Mavin artistes as of then and had the likes of Don Jazzy, Dr Sid, D’Prince, Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello and Reekado Banks on it. Dorobuccci dropped in the month of May 2014 and enjoyed massive airplay all over the country. The same year, Di’ja also featured on ‘’Arise’’ which had Don Jazzy and Reekado Banks on it as well. Next to follow were hits such as Adaobi and Looku Looku which featured her and other Mavin crew members. She was able to set the tone for the release of her highly successful single ”Aww” which still remains her biggest hit. The song was released in December 2014 and topped several music charts in Nigeria and also across the African continent. The video of the song also gained a lot of views on YouTube and this helped to project her career higher as she gained a lot of fans as a result of the success of the song. Di’ja currently does not have many awards to her name and her nominations are few as well. Several reasons may be responsible for this but certainly not her lack of talent. Hopefully, her career will pick up and she can take her spot at the top of the chain. Her current awards and nominations are as follows.

In 2008, she won her first award for Best New Artist at the Beat Music Awards in Canada. In 2009, her song Rock steady was nominated in the category of Best Urban/R&B Single at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. In 2014, she was nominated as the Most Promising Act to Watch at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.



Di’ja remains one of Nigeria’s most talented music artistes. She has had a couple of hit songs to her credit over the years and is poised to release more hits as her career progresses. The beautiful mother of two kids is happily married and perfectly handling marital life, motherhood and her music career.
