David Adedeji Adeleke popularly known as Davido and also OBO, is one of Nigeria’s top-rated music artists. The young man who hails from Ede in Osun state but was born in Atlanta, USA took the music industry in Nigeria by storm in 2011 when he released his first single and he hasn’t slowed down ever since. Let’s delve into the background and life of this great Nigerian.

Early Days And Start Of His Music Journey

David Adedeji Adeleke aka Davido was born on the 21st of November, 1992. He is an American-born Nigerian recording artist, record producer, and performer. His birthplace is in Atlanta, Georgia.

His father, Chief Deji Adeleke is a business magnate and one of the richest men in Nigeria while his mother, who is late was a lecturer in a local university. Not much is known about his childhood so we pick up from his university days at Oakwood University.

While at Oakwood, he majored Business Administration but it was while he was studying at Oakwood that he fell in love with music. He shared a room in the dormitory with a Rwandan track athlete which quite surprised him. He also got quite close to his neighbor who lives above his room named Jaymo, an American. Jaymo was into music too at the time so the two struck a bond.

Music Career

Until March 2011, Davido was into music just as a hobby. He was in a group called “KB international” in the USA but things didn’t pan out as Davido wanted so he went solo. After going solo, he began to do vocals too, recording his own songs. So he gave all his attention to song recording and getting good beats which ultimately affected his academic performance.

After three semesters in Oakwood University, Davido dropped out without informing his father. He moved to Atlanta to start a new life and used his elder brothers ID for a couple of months.

With his brother’s ID, he got into clubs and squandered his tuition on drinks and motels. Much later, he decided to leave the Atlanta and relocated to London. He threw away his Sim and started life afresh. He decided to shift his music focus from production to vocals and bought some equipment.


He eventually returned to Nigeria in 2011 and officially launched his music career. Still, his father insisted he acquired University education but this time in Nigeria. He then enrolled at Babcock University and earned a degree in music in 2015.

He and his elder brother, Adewale Adeleke founded HKN Music and Davido launched his career on the platform. His debut single “Back When ft Naeto C” was released in 2011 and this was quickly followed by another single, “Dami Duro” also in 2011. Both songs were well accepted by music lovers in Nigeria.

That same year, he commenced work on his debut studio album titled Omo Baba Olowo. Davido produced “Back When”, showing his production skills but he collaborated with another producer, Shizzi on “Dami Duro”. The video of “Back When” was directed by top director Clarence Peters who so directed the video for “Dami Duro”. The stage was well set for the release of his debut album which eventually dropped in 2012.


The album had hit songs such as “Back When” ft. Naeto C, “Overseas”, “Dami Duro” ft. Sina Rambo “All of You”, “Ekuro ft. IcePrince”, “Gbon Gbon”, and “Feel Alright”. Davido continued to drop hit songs afterward, singles like “One of a Kind”, “Skelewu”, “Gobe”, “Aye”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)”, “Naughty”, “Owo Ni Koko”, “The Sound”, and “The Money” all dropped between 2012 and 2015 earning him top spots on music charts all over Africa.

These singles were included in his sophomore album titled “The Baddest”. He has continued to release hit songs and sell out concerts both at home and abroad. In July 2014, Davido announced while in an interview with The New Age newspaper that he plans on collaborating with American rappers Rick Ross and Meek Mill. He eventually released his much-awaited collaboration with Meek Mill titled “Fans Mi” a year later. This paved way for international fame for Davido.

In 2016, Davido began making plans to start his own record label which he named DMW. He has since launched the label and signed highly-rated artistes such as Mayorkun (a headies next rated winner now), Dremo and Perruzi. On the 30th of November 2017, Davido won the best African act at the MOBO Awards and he also became the first African act to perform live at the awards. 24th June 2018 saw Davido become the first Africa based artist to receive his award on the BET Awards main stage.

Recently he sold out shows in the little-known Island nation of Suriname. On the 27th of January 2019, Davido sold out the iconic O2 Arena in London. He is indeed the baddest as he likes to call himself.

Davido and Wizkid are both superstars of the Nigerian music industry and have been embroiled in a bitter rivalry Overy supremacy. This has led to a confrontation between both camps as well as fans of both stars in the past. Currently, even though they are not exactly friends, they have found a way to sort out their differences and do away with all the drama for now.

He has won a total of 44 awards from 96 nominations so far in his career. Davido is currently single but he is in a relationship with the beautiful Chioma Rowland. He is the father to Imade Adeleke whom he had with Sophia Momodu and Hailey Adeleke whom he had with a lady named Amanda.

Davido is a record label boss DMW and is also a joint owner of HKN Music alongside his elder brother Adewale. He owns houses in Lekki area of Lagos and in Atlanta, Georgia where he was born. He has a fleet of cars and also owns some really expensive timepieces.

Some of the cars you are likely to find in his garage include a Honda, Porsche and a Range Rover. The highly talented artiste signed a multi-million deal with SONY music in 2015 and has also signed highly lucrative deals with top brands in Nigeria. Some of his endorsement deals include deals signed with First Bank, MTN, and Pepsi.

His MTN deal which he signed in 2012 was said to be worth ₦30 million. His next major endorsement deal came in October 2013 when he signed a contract with Guinness Nigeria.

The deal saw him perform at the Guinness World of More Concert along with other top-rated Nigerian artistes, the likes of P-Square, D’banj, Wizkid, Ice Prince, Burna Boy, Olamide, Phyno, Chidinma, Waje, and Tiwa Savage. His deal with Pepsi is rumored to be worth N100 million.

In May 2017, he was listed among Africa’s top ten most bankable artists by Forbes Africa Magazine. Bear in mind that Davido comes from one of the wealthiest families in Nigeria today. His net worth is estimated to be about $20 million.
