Atiku Abubakar is the former vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and currently the PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 INEC General Elections.
Atiku was born on the 25th of November 1946 to a Fulani trader, Garba Abubakar. His mother Aisha Kande is the second wife of Garba Abubakar. He was born and is from Adamawa state.
He is also the Waziri of Adamawa.
Atiku is a very ambitious man, a popular politician and one of Nigeria successful business mogul. He is awarded the GCON award as the first executive vice-president of Nigeria in the 4th Republic, from 1999 to 2007, under the then president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Early life and Education
Atiku was initially denied education by his parents due to the problem of western education in the Northern area of Nigeria at that time. However, by the regional government’s intervention, he started school at the age of 8 against the wish of his father who was reprimanded in prison and made to pay a fee to be released.
He started school at the Jada Elementary School and went to secondary school at the Adamawa Provincial High School Yola in the year 1960. Having excelled in the English and Literature areas, he earned a third-year WASC/GCE certificate in 1965.
Thereafter he went to the Nigerian Police College in Kaduna but could not continue his education after a while there as he had no O-level mathematics result.
He started work at the tax office, Regional Ministry of Finance and shortly after, he enrolled in the school of hygiene Kano in the year 1966, graduating in 1967.
His education did not stop there, Young Atiku decided to a study Law at the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, thanks for to a grant from the Regional Government. Having graduated in 1969, during the civil war, he proceeded to work at the Nigerian Customs Service.
Having started work at the Nigerian Customs Service, he served his country for 20 years before the retiring as deputy director of Nigerian Customs Service to join politics and continue his business in 1989.
Atiku first contested for the governorship in the then Gongola state, however, his ambitious nature makes him aims for the top. In the year 1993, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar contested for the presidential seat and emerged third during the primaries of his party, the Social Democratic Party, losing to sinner Chief MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe.
In the year 1998, he was elected the governor of Adamawa state but then left it to become the running mate of Olusegun Obasanjo at that time who was contesting for the President of Nigeria under the People’s Democratic Party platform.
Olusegun Obasanjo emerged the winner from the February 1999 elections and was sworn in together with Atiku as president and vice-president on 24th May 1999.
At the completion of the first tenure in 2003, they contested and won for the second term.
During the second term, he fell out with the then president after rejecting his third term bid. This was because Atiku wanted to succeed him. This was a serious enmity which lasted for years.
President Olusegun Obasanjo refused to allow Atiku to contest for president on the grounds of financial misconduct. This caused INEC to disqualify him. However, a trial was held at the Supreme Court and was in his favor. Hence the Supreme Court ordered INEC to include him as a presidential candidate.
Due to the problem he had with Obasanjo, he defected to Action Congress. At the end of the elections, he could only come third behind the winner Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party(ANPP).
After a long time, he defected, he defected to APC, during its formation and contested in its primaries for the presidential seat during the 2015 general election, but lost to Muhammadu Buhari.
Now in the 2019 general elections, he is contesting for the presidential seat on the PDP platform, having reconciled with his longtime enemy and former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, who backed him to contest in the 2019 general elections.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar went into business first in the real estate sector. He applied for a loan of 31,000 Naira in 1974 to build his house in Yola.
He rented out the apartment and haven’t used the proceeds to buy land and build a second home. Today, he has lots of houses and landed properties in many parts of the country.
Apart from the real estate sector, Atiku is also an agribusinessman. First, he bought 2500 hectares of land in Yola to cultivate corn and cotton. However, this business could not continue due to the many challenges it faces then. It was later shut down. He is also into trading, buying and selling business. He distributes rice, flour, and sugar.
Also while working in the customs, he established a company through the advice of Gabrielle Volpi, an Italian businessman who was doing business in Nigeria. Hence he set up the Nigeria Container Services called NICOTES. A shipping logistics company. This company was later renamed INTELS.
Other companies owned by Atiku Abubakar include Adama Beverages Limited, American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola. This university has received approval and recognition from Google. He also owns a factory that manufactures animal feeds.
In January 2017, the US government refused to offer a travel visa to Atiku on the grounds of money laundering charges connected to his company INTELS.
Marriage and Family Life
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is married to many wives. First is Titilayo Albert, a 19-year old woman whom Atiku met at Idi-Iroko. They got married in December 1971. This marriage was secretly done due to opposition by his family especially his father. However, this union is blessed with four children, Fatima, the first daughter, follows by Adamu, Halima and Aminu.
Atiku married his second wife Ladi Yakubu in January 1979. Together they have Abba, Atiku, Zainab, Ummi-Hauwa, Maryam and Rukayatu.
Atiku third wife is princess Rukaiyatu, daughter of late Lamido of Adamawa. They have seven children: Aisha, Hadiza, Aliyu, Asmau, Mustafa, Laila and Abdulsalam. Atiku fourth wife is Fatima Shettima. Together they have Amina, Mohammed, Ahmed and Shehu(twins), Zainab and Aisha(twins) and Hafsat.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar later divorced Ladi Abubakar and married Jennifer Iwenjora who later changed her name to Jamila Atiku Abubakar. Together they have Abdulmalik, Zara, and Faisal.
