Asa was born in the city of Paris, France on the 17th of September 1982 to Nigerian parents. She has 3 brothers and is the only girl in the family.
She spent her early childhood in the country before relocating back to Nigeria with her family at the age of 2. Her family settled in Lagos upon returning from France. She had her primary and secondary education in Lagos after which she returned to France.
While living in Nigeria, she developed interest in music. Her father was a cinematographer and had a collection of great records for his work. So Asa grew up listening to music greats such as Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Erykah Badu, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, King Sunny Adé, Raphael Saadiq, D’Angelo, Ebenezer Obey, Angelique Kidjo, and Lagbaja.
The works of these great musicians both local and foreign informed her choice to pursue music as a career.
Upon completion of her secondary education, Asa returned to France at the age of 20. She enrolled at the IMFP school of Jazz music but her teachers told her she was ready to become a recording artiste and needed no schooling so she dropped out. She then focused on carving a career for herself as a recording artiste.
In 2004, She met her friend and manager, Janet who later introduced her to ace musician and record producer Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo.
The first single released by Asa titled Eyé Adaba was making waves in the country at that time and soon got her signed to Naïve Records. Asa then teamed up with Cobhams to produce her first album titled Asa(Asha) with input from Christophe Dupouy and Benjamin Constant. The Album was released in 2007 and was a massive hit, it is rated platinum. The album also topped charts not only in Nigeria but all over the African continent, Europe, and Asia.
As a result of the success of her album, Asa was featured on “Kokoya”, the soundtrack of the film “The First Cry” in 2007. She then built on the successes of her debut album by following up with another in 2009 titled “Live in Paris”. The album also did well. It earned her a commission to record a soundtrack titled “The Place To Be” for GTBank, one of the top banks in Nigeria.
A third album titled “Beautiful Imperfection” was released on the 10th of October, 2010. The album went double Gold in France the following year. Asa featured on “Zarafa” the soundtrack for the Animation movie in 2011.
In August 2014, her 4th album was released and was titled “Bed of Stone”. Asa then went on tour between 2015 and 2017 to promote her latest album. She didn’t put out any new song since 2014 until she dropped “The Beginning” in May 2019.
Her first major award came in 2008 when she won the French Constantin Award. She was voted as the best fresh talent of 10 singers or groups by a jury made up of 19 music industry specialists in Paris, France.
In 2011, Asa received nomination for “Female Artiste of the Year” at the French Music Awards Victoires de la Musique.
