AThe N-power programme is a socio-economic programme put in place by the government of the day in Nigeria to help tackle the problem of youth unemployment and its attendant problems. Goals of N-power Scheme
The goals of this FGN initiative are listed below.
To reduce the current high rate of unemployment in the country.
To create a system that would facilitate easy transfer of employability, entrepreneurial and technical skills.
To bring solutions to ailing public service as well as Government diversification policy.
Structure of the N-power Scheme
Under the N-power scheme are different programmes each aimed at tackling an area of the economy. Some of the programmes under the scheme are:
Participants will be trained in one of these programmes and then sent to the field to impact society with their newly acquired skills. Under the scheme, participants will volunteer for a total of 2 years and will be paid monthly allowance by the federal government. There is the graduate programme for those who have acquired tertiary education and there is the non-graduate program for artisans. For the graduate programme, 500,000 unemployed graduates would be trained and engaged. They will be given gadgets pertaining to their selected program under the scheme to help them carry out their duties. These engaged graduates will provide teaching, instructional, and also advisory solutions under four programmes of the scheme.
N-power Graduate Programmes
Graduates under the scheme are engaged in the following programmes.
Graduates under this programme will serve as assistant teachers in primary and secondary schools all over the country, helping to take education to remote/marginalised areas. This programme will help them gain valuable work experience and also help mould them better for the work environment.
Graduates under the N-power health programme will be trained to serve as public health assistants. They will also be trained by health professionals to provide basic health diagnostic services in their deployed area.
N-power Community Education
Those under this programme will serve as civil and adult educators.
Those in the agro programme will bridge the gap between agricultural researchers and farmers to help them with tips for better farming practices so as to make Nigeria self-sufficient in terms of food production.
Non-Graduate Programmes of N-power
Non-graduate programmes under the scheme are discussed below.
This programme is a “train to job” initiative that is aimed at speeding-up advancements in technology and creativity in the country, leading to diversification of the economy. 25,000 non-graduates will be engaged in this programme and each would be provided with a computing device as well as other information products needed to effectively discharge his or her duties. This also is divided into sections, these are;
5000 Nigerian youths will be engaged in this programme. They would be trained with the aim of bringing out the creativity in them so they could become exporters of world-class services. They would be trained in one of the following; animation, graphics design, post-production and script writing. This programme is for for 3 months. 1 month for theory and 2 months for projects. At the end of the programme, participants would either get internship opportunities home or abroad, get linked for job or market Opportunities.
N-power Tech Hardware
10,000 young Nigerians will be brought into the ICT industry by training them to be hardware technicians. This programme is practical oriented and participants will be trained to service and manufacture tech hardware like mobile phones, tablets, computers and other tech hardware. The duration of this programme is 4 months, 3 months for training and 1 month for assessment, graduation, and setup.
N-power Tech Software
Another 10,000 young Nigerians will be trained on software development for both local and international markets. The programme will last for 11 weeks after which participants would be linked with placement opportunities and also shown how to start a career in the ICT industry.
This is a skill to job (training and certification) programme aimed at training 75,000 young unemployed Nigerians to become skilled and competent technicians, artisans and service professionals. The industries this programme will focus include; Automotive, building services, utilities, construction, aluminum, gas and built environment services.
It is important to mention at this point that the programme is not an employment programme so you would only be paid an allowance of NGN23,000 every month for the 2 years you will be engaged in the programme. The aim of the programme is to provide you with skills necessary to succeed I paid employment or for you to set up a business of your own.
Eligibility For N-power Scheme
The basic criteria is that you must be an unemployed Nigerian of between 18 and 35 years of age. Others are:
You must pass the aptitude test and other relevant tests
You must have genuine interest in the chosen field
You must show you can fit into the programme.
N-power Registration Step-by-step Guide
Before visiting the official N-Power website, ensure that you can provide all of the following information accurately:
Correct name record;
Active phone number and e-mail address;
Place and date of birth;
Carefully compiled and ready to be uploaded CV;
Bank verification number;
If you have all the relevant information ready, proceed to the official N-power portal to register.
Follow the following steps to apply for the N-Power program:
Open your web browser and visit the official N-portal website portal.npower.gov.ng.
Select one of available categories in the scheme: N-power Volunteer corps, N-power Knowledge, N-power build. Relevant programmes you can participate in will then be presented in each of the sections.
Select the program you are interested in and the “Apply now” button will appear on your screen. Click on it.
After completing all the above mentioned steps, the page containing the application form will be opened for you to fill. You are to carefully fill in all the required details in the spaces provided and avoid errors by checking that all the information supplied is accurate before submitting the application form.
After this, you have to scroll down the page to upload all the required documents such as your CV, passport data, Degree qualification certificate and so on. Candidates who provide accurately all the information required will receive a confirmation with the N-Power logo. A letter will be sent to the email address you provided while registering to confirm you have been successfully enrolled for the program. A while after submitting your application form, you will be able to check your pre-selection status on the official N-Power portal. To do this, you will be required to indicate your BVN or e-mail address. If you made the preliminary selection, you will receive a congratulatory letter to that effect and will be able to proceed further to the next program.
