93 year old Queen Elizabeth II has sat on the British throne since 1952 although she was crowned in 1953. We take a look at the biography and net worth of one of the longest reigning monarchs of all time.
Biography Of Queen Elizabeth II
On the 21st of April 1926, Queen Elizabeth II was born in the city of London. She was named Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary at birth. Her father was Prince Albert, Duke of York. He was the second son of George V.
Her mother, the Duchess of York, is former Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Princess Margaret, Elizabeth’s sister was born 4 years later in 1930. Her father, Prince Albert became King of England in 1936 as a result of his brother, King Edward VIII (aka Duke of Windsor), abdicating the throne to marry a twice-divorced American named Wallis Warfield Simpson.
He became George VI in honor of his father. Princess Elizabeth therefore became the Heiress Presumptive, meaning that she would only become Queen if her parents did not have a son who would have a better claim to the throne than her.
Princess Elizabeth when she was 13, met 18-year-old Prince Philip, who was her distant cousin. The two fell in love and wanted to get married, but her father, the King wanted to make sure it was real and not just because he was her first love.
Prince Philip had to renounce his royal title as a Prince of Greece and Denmark, and became a British subject for the marriage to happen. This he did so he could marry the love of his life. He also adopted the surname of his uncle, Louis Mountbatten.
Philip was then named Duke of Edinburgh shortly before they got married but he was not made a Prince of the United Kingdom until 1957. The couple were joined in holy matrimony on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey.
The following year, Princess Elizabeth was delivered of a baby boy whom they named Charles Philip Arthur George. In 1950, the couple welcomed a daughter, Anne Elizabeth Alice. Prince Andrew was born in 1960 while her last child, Prince Edward was born in 1964.
In February 1952 while in Kenya, Princess Elizabeth and her husband were informed of the passing of her father, the King after losing his battle against lung cancer. The couple returned home as Queen and Consort. She was not crowned until the following year.
Queen Elizabeth II succeeded her father on the British throne following his death in 1952. She therefore became head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries. The countries are: United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon.
Queen Elizabeth II has reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes, such as devolution in the United Kingdom, Canadian patriation, and the decolonization of Africa. The number of her realms varied between 1956 and 1992 as territories gained independence and realms hitherto under her rule became republics.
Some of her many historic visits and meetings include a state visit to the Republic of Ireland and visits to or from five popes. She has celebrated significant events on the throne including her coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, and Diamond Jubilees in 1977, 2002, and 2012 respectively. She became the first British monarch to reach a Sapphire Jubilee in 2017.
Queen Elizabeth II holds records for the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch. She is also the world’s longest-serving female head of state, and the oldest living monarch. Also the nonagenarian is the longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving current head of state.
Her reign has occasionally being plagued by republican sentiments and press criticism of the Royal family, particularly after her children’s marriages broke down, her annus horribilis in 1992 and the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Support for the monarch however remains high, as does her personal popularity. She has introduced reforms in an attempt to modernize the British monarchy while retaining its core values.
