With private universities now fully integrated into the Nigerian educational system, there has been a scramble by those who can afford to run one to establish their own. Consequently, Nigerian churches are not left behind in this movement. The role of the church in education is well documented especially in Nigeria. Currently, there are a total of 79 approved private universities out of a total 169 licensed universities in Nigeria. 39 of these universities are church owned/affiliated. Another 15 are in different stages of development that would lead to approval thereby increasing the number of church owned universities in Nigeria.

A comprehensive list of all church owned universities in Nigeria as well as their proprietors is given below. We present a comprehensive report of the Church owned universities/church affiliated universities and their proprietors in Nigeria as at today.

Adeleke University located in Ede, Osun state is owned by Dr. Deji Adeleke.

Ajayi Crowther University is owned by Anglican Communion of Nigeria. It is located in Oyo town, Oyo state.

Anchor University – Owned by Deeperlife Bible Church. It is located in Ipaja, Lagos State.

Babcock University – Owned by 7th Day Adventist. It is located in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state.

Benson Idahosa University is owned by Church of God Mission. It is located in Benin city, Edo state.

Bingham University is owned by Evangelical Churches Winning All (ECWA). The university is located along Abuja-keffi Road, New karu, Abuja.

Bishop Godfrey Okoye University is owned by Catholic Dioecese of Enugu. The university is located in Enugu, Enugu state.

Bowen University – Owned by Nigerian Baptist Convention. It is located in Iwo, Osun state.

Covenant University is owned by World Mission Agency (WMA) of the Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel. The University is located in Ota, Ogun state.

Clifford University, is located in Owerrinta, Abia state. It is owned by Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Crawford University is owned by Apostolic Faith Mission. It is located in Igbesa, Ogun state.

Dominican University, Ibadan is owned by Order of Preachers, Nigerian Dominican Community (Catholic). The University is located in Ibadan, Oyo state.

Dominion University is located in Ibadan, Oyo State. It is owned by Victory International Church (Rehoboth Cathedral).

Evangel University is owned by Assemblies of God, Nigeria. It is located in Akaeze, Ebonyi state.

This is the full list of church owned/church affiliated universities in Nigeria. The number isn’t quite surprising as the church has played a big role in education of Nigerians since the arrival of missionaries in the country several years ago.
